🌿 Někdo vás o něco požádá a vy kývnete dřív, než stihnete domyslet otázku.

První nechává dech volně klesnout do břicha.

Vydechněte delším výdechem, než byl nádech, a s výdechem nechte klesnout ramena.

V tichu po výdechu si v duchu řekněte „ano“ a sledujte, co udělá tělo. Uvolní se, nebo se něco stáhne? Pak si stejně potichu řekněte „ne“ a sledujte totéž.

Teprve potom odpovězte. Klidně i větou „rozmyslím si to“.

A Breath Before Yes: How to Feel in Your Body a Consent That Isn’t Yours

🌿 Someone asks you for something, and you nod before you’ve even finished thinking through the question. Your head is still calculating, but your mouth has already said yes. Only in the evening, in your shoulders or under your ribs, do you feel that the yes wasn’t entirely yours.

The body speaks before thoughts do. A consent we choose and a consent someone pushed us into often behave differently in the body. The first lets the breath drop freely into the belly. The second holds it high in the chest, as if the body were getting ready to defend itself. Psychologist Jack Brehm described resistance to an imposed choice and called it reactance. In qigong, we simply pay attention to what is happening in the body.

The exercise takes a minute and can be done anywhere: on the phone, in a meeting, in the kitchen.

A Breath Before Yes

🌬️ Before you answer, let the question hang in the air for a moment. Just say “one moment,” or simply swallow.

Breathe in through your nose, slowly and not to the full. Notice where the breath goes, whether all the way into the belly or whether it stops beneath the collarbones.

Breathe out with an exhale longer than the inhale, and let your shoulders drop as you exhale.

In the silence after the exhale, say “yes” to yourself and watch what the body does. Does it loosen, or does something tighten? Then, just as quietly, say “no” and watch the same.

Only then answer. Even with the words “I’ll think about it.”

What the Body Doesn’t Say

🪨 The body is not an oracle. A tightening in the chest doesn’t automatically mean a wrong decision. Sometimes the body tightens before something new that we truly want, because it excites us or frightens us a little. The exercise won’t decide for you. But it gives you back a short moment between the question and the answer, a moment in which you are the one deciding.

Try it for a week with small things: an invitation, a new feature on your phone, a colleague’s request. Will you notice how many times you said yes before you took a breath?
